The 2019 Quintessenz Kalterersee Classico Superiore from Kellerei Kaltern takes all of the fruity, vibrant and juicy qualities of Schiava and adds a captivating dark cloak of minerality. Notes of blackberry, peppery, minty herbs, wet stone and floral undergrowth fill the glass. Its textures are soft and pure, showing more elegance than expected; yet through a building combination of concentrated black fruit and acid, an aching sensation evolves, one that leaves you craving another sip. This is a powerful, yet perfectly balanced Kalterersee that’s guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat

The Italian Lago di Caldaro is know as "Kalterersee" in Alto Adige, and that's how the Lake Caldaro subzone is written on the front label of this bottle. Language translations aside, the Cantina Kaltern 2019 Alto Adige Lago di Caldaro Classico Superiore Quintessenz is a pure expression of the Schiava grape that finds its natural home directly off the shores of this powdery blue glacier lake. This delicate wine offers blueberry and wild cassis with pressed violets and lavender essence. Schiava shares the same delicate touch that you often get with Pinot Noir. Some 50,000 bottles were made.
