Medium intense garnet; aromas of bing cherry, turmeric and tobacco leaf. Medium-full, with good acidity, moderate persistence and subdued wood notes. Varietally correct and nicely balanced, although I’d like to see a bit more concentration. Another year in the bottle will help round out this wine; peak in 6-8 years.

Perfumed, delicate and light on its feet, the Cantina Kaltern 2017 Alto Adige Pinot Nero Riserva Saltner delivers that quintessential elegance that comes when this Burgundian grape is matched to the high-altitude vineyards of the Italian Dolomites. This wine offers wild berry, bramble, lilac and other blue flowers, with cola, white licorice and candied apricot. There are subtle herbal and mineral notes mixed in as well. This lean-bodied red wraps over the palate with smooth and silky intensity. Production is 45,000 bottles strong
