The Cantina Kaltern 2019 Alto Adige Lagrein is rich and dark in appearance, with black fruit aromas of blackberry, dried blueberry, plum and Morello cherry. The wine shows good primary intensity, with more of those raw and tangy black fruit aromas. It offers dimension and concentration, followed by mild tannins and moderate length. In conclusion, you get a lot of fruit bang over a raw, approach and accessible style in the 250,000-bottle release. Lagrein sees five months of aging in concrete vats, with just a small 15% that ages in oak. This accounts for the wine's informal style and its pretty texture

Bright purple; aromas of myrtle, black plum and clove. Big and ripe with a lush style, this has medium-weight tannins, very good acidity, and subtle oak. I like the restraint of this wine, which is unlike many other examples of Lagrein that are styled for power. Very harmonious and pleasing, this could be enjoyed tonight with lighter game, but I would prefer to taste this again in another two years, with peak in 5-6 years.

Gewurztraminer 'Campaner' 2018

I have not tasted much Gewürztraminer from Cantina Kaltern, so this is a real treat. The 2018 Alto Adige Gewürztraminer Campaner is enormously fragrant and bright with a very specific and focused delivery that is not easy to achieve with this grape. Gewürztraminer aromas can appear all over the place, or become unruly, if not managed correctly. That's not the case here. White flower, jasmine and passion fruit are followed by a glossy note of latex or natural rubber that is true to the variety. There is a touch of sweet softness on the close along with tangy green herbal accents. Drink this wine young to capture that beautiful primary intensity.​
