Casalfarneto | Verdicchio Riserva 'Crisio' 2017 | 93 | With its color, a brilliant yellow gold, the 2017 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Riserva Crisio blasts up from the glass with a heady display of crushed hazelnuts, incense, ginger, dried peaches, apricots and hints of raw honey. There's a density and weight within, contrasted by vibrant acidity, that immediately communicates pure elegance, as saline-minerals give way to mulled apples and autumnal spices. This leaves the palate unexpectedly refreshed, yet also with a gentle tug of tannin, as the 2017 tapers off to hints of roasted almond and a twang of citrus. While the style may not be for everyone, this is a tour de force rendition of Crisio, which is the result of three separate harvests from early-to-late-ripened Verdicchio, which is then refined in a combination of oak barrels and steel tanks. | |
